Character development is the other broad goal of education, along with academic development! Character education helps children and youth to understand, care about, and act on core ethical and citizenship values.

Character education is about celebrating what's right
with young people while enabling them to develop knowledge and life skills for enhancing ethical and responsible behavior.

Character Education: Teaching Kids to Care

The purpose of character education is to reach beyond the core curriculum goals; to touch the hearts, minds, and lives of students in far-reaching ways that can transform a future of failure to a life of success. Understanding that some goals cannot be fully measured during our tenure as educators, however, we continue to plant seeds of integrity, honesty, respect, self-discipline, and responsibility. We work together as collaborators in creation, knowing that there will be a reciprocal return on our investment in current students, future generations, and society.

Character education teaches young people to:

bulletDevelop good self-esteem as a product of responsible behavior
bulletAssume responsibility for their actions
bulletKnow "right" from "wrong"
bulletRespect the rights of others
bulletMaximize their use of time and talents
bulletWork cooperatively with others
bulletDevelop decision-making and problem-solving skills
bulletUse self-discipline to achieve goals
bulletResist negative peer pressure
